Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Suevit.
Etymology: < German Suevit (1924 or earlier) < post-classical Latin Suevia , name of a region in Germany (see note at Suevian adj. and compare Swabian adj. 1) + -it -ite suffix1.
Geology.
A type of breccia associated with impact craters, consisting of a welded mass (welded adj. 3a) of debris fragments resembling volcanic tuff but showing signs of alteration by mechanical and thermal shock; (originally) such rock from the Ries crater near Nördlingen in Germany.
