Etymology: Of unascertained origin; the relation to surf is obscure.
Obsolete.
The inrush (of the sea) towards the shore. An early instance is perhaps to be found in c1475 in T. Wright & R. P. Wülcker Anglo-Saxon & Old Eng. Vocab. (1884) I. 800/25 Hec ledonis, a sulse [? read suffe].
