Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin subterrāneus.
Etymology: < classical Latin subterrāneus underground, subterranean (also with reference to the underworld), situated below the level of the earth, beneath the horizon < sub- sub- prefix + terra earth (see terra n.) + -āneus (see -aneous suffix). Compare French souterrain (1160 in Old French as sozterrain ), Spanish subterráneo (a1457), Portuguese subterrâneo (1593), Italian sotterraneo (a1308 as adjective, a1712 as noun; also †sotterrano , †subterraneo , †subterrano , etc.). Compare earlier subterraneal adj., subterranean adj., subterraneous adj., subterrestrial adj. In use as noun after either classical Latin subterrāneum underground chamber or French souterrain souterrain n. Compare earlier subterranean n., subterrany n., and souterrain n.In β. forms after terrain n., terrain adj.
