Etymology: < Middle French, French suffragant (adjective) auxiliary, subordinate (late 16th cent. in Montaigne), (noun) bishop considered in relation to the archbishop of his province (1522 as souffragant ), supporter, helper (1541), alteration of Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French suffragan , suffragain suffragan n. after classical Latin suffrāgant- , suffrāgans , present participle of suffrāgārī (see suffragate v.). Compare earlier suffragan n., suffragan adj.Compare Old Occitan suffraguant , Italian suffragante (17th cent. or earlier as noun and adjective). The use as adjective designating a subordinate diocese (see sense B. 1) is not paralleled in French until the mid 18th cent.
