Etymology: < summer n.1 + field n.1In sense 1 after post-classical Latin aestiva area (compare aestive adj.), with misinterpretation of the second element, which can denote an open space or exercise ground as well as a threshing floor (see area n.). Compare summer hall n. 2 and later summer floor n. at summer n.1 and adj. Compounds 3 (and the underlying Aramaic form cited at that lemma).
