Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin superstit-, superstes.
Etymology: < classical Latin superstit-, superstes standing over, surviving < superstāre to stand over < super- super- prefix + stāre to stand (see stand v.). Compare Middle French superstite (a1500, rare). Compare superstitie n.With parents superstits in quot. a1623 compare (with slightly different sense) classical Latin parentēs superstitēs, used occasionally in legal texts and funerary inscriptions of parents who have survived their child.
Obsolete. rare.
Still alive, surviving.Placed after the noun, with plural in -s.
