单词 | superstring |
释义 | superstringn. Physics. The basic constituent of matter according to a development of string theory incorporating the principle of supersymmetry; a supersymmetric string (string n. Additions). Frequently attributive, esp. in superstring theory. In superstring theory the standard elementary particles arise as excitations of more fundamental entities known as superstrings. String theory in its original form could describe only bosons, not fermions, and suffered from the prediction of unphysical particle states known as tachyons. Supersymmetric strings, or superstrings, solved these problems, making superstring theory the first viable candidate for a truly unified theory of all the fundamental interactions, or ‘Theory of Everything’. Schwarz in Physics Rep. 89 227 The restricted DPM [= dual pion model]—which I refer to as ‘superstring theory’—is therefore the only candidate for a consistent theory of interacting strings free from ghosts and tachyons. 1985 Nature 3 Jan. 9/2 Superstrings are entities in ten dimensions (nine space-like, one time-like) which are expected to behave like ordinary particles when the ten dimensions are collapsed to four. 1988 S. W. Hawking Brief Hist. Amer. (U.K. ed.) June 45/1 A large number of research programs have sought to reconcile general relativity and quantum mechanics: superstring theory, causal triangulation theory, noncommutative geometry, and more.
