Etymology: < classical Latin supervacāneus additional to what is required, superfluous, redundant ( < super- super- prefix + vacāre to be empty or void (see vacant adj.) + -āneus : see -aneous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare Portuguese supervacaneo (16th cent.), Italian supervacaneo (14th cent.). Compare supervacaneal adj.
Now rare.
Unnecessarily or pointlessly added over and above what is essential; superfluous, redundant.
