Etymology: < Japanese sumō sumo wrestling, sumo wrestler (1603 as sumǒ in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam, glossed as ‘wrestling’), ultimately < †sumafu to resist, fight, wrestle.The form smoo reflects the pronunciation of the Japanese word with devoiced u, which is often not heard by speakers of English.
