Etymology: < Malay sumpitan blowpipe < sumpit (see sumpit n.) + -an, a derivational suffix.In β. forms apparently showing alteration after Arabic sabaṭāna , (non-classical) zarbaṭāna blowpipe (see cebratane n.). Compare Dutch soempitan (1863 or earlier).
