单词 sun yat-sen
释义

Sun Yat-senn.

Brit. /ˌsʊn jatˈsɛn/, U.S. /ˌsʊn ˌjætˈsɛn/
Forms: 1900s– Sun Yat-sen, 1900s– Sun Yatsen.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Sun Yat-sen.
Etymology: < Sun Yat-sen, the name used in English by Sun Wen (1866–1925), Chinese revolutionary and first president of the Republic of China in 1912, credited with its foundation. As a result both of Chinese naming practices and of the need to use an alias as a revolutionary, Sun Wen became known by several different given names (Sun being the family name: Chinese (Mandarin) Sūn, (Cantonese) Syūn). His native language was Cantonese Chinese, and as a student in Hong Kong in the late 19th cent. he took the Cantonese name Yaht-sīn (lit. ‘free spirit, immortal’), which he used when corresponding with Westerners and which eventually became Anglicized as Yat-sen. He is now usually known in China as Sūn Zhōngshān (the Mandarin form of another, later name).
attributive. Designating an outfit, article of clothing, etc., of the simple, Westernized style introduced by Sun Yat-sen as a form of national dress shortly after the founding of the Republic of China in 1912. Sun Yat-sen jacket n. a man's tunic-like jacket with a high collar and large buttoned pockets. Sun Yat-sen suit n. a man's suit consisting of a Sun Yat-sen jacket and tight trousers. Cf. Mao n. 1.Mao suit, Mao jacket, etc., are now more common.
