Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French superintendence; Latin superintendentia.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Middle French superintendence, superintendance (1491; < superintendant superintendent n.: see -ence -ence suffix), and partly (ii) < post-classical Latin superintendentia superintendency n.; see -ence suffix.
