Originally: a plant that is a hybrid of the Jerusalem artichoke ( Helianthus tuberosus) with another species of sunflower (probably the common sunflower, H. annuus, or H. strumosus). In later use also: the Jerusalem artichoke itself. Also: a tuber of either of these plants.

1955 Southern Cooperative Ser. Bull. (Georgia Agric. Exper. Station) No. 27. 39 Sensational claims for a hybrid Helianthus in Europe led to the introduction of ‘Sunchokes’ from Sweden. Probably a cross between the Jerusalem artichoke, Helianthus tuberosus and H. stromosus.
