Compare post-classical Latin supracaricarius (1567 in a document from Genoa), French subrécargue (1704; a1667 as soubrescart; compare also Middle French soubrequart (mid 16th cent. in Rabelais)), Spanish sobrecargo (18th cent. or earlier), Portuguese sobrecarga (19th cent. in this sense).
