Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: super- prefix, Latin lūmin- , lūmen , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < super- prefix + classical Latin lūmin-, lūmen light (see lumen n.) + -al suffix1.In the following quot. the spelling superluminal shows an error for superliminal:1909 Pearson's Mag. Feb. 191/2 He finds that the manifestations of the mediums are not progressive, but devolutionary, infra- and not super-normal, sub- and never super-luminal.

Designating a speed greater than that of light; having such a speed. Also: designating astronomical objects that appear to have such a speed but are thought not to in reality.An apparent faster-than-light speed typically occurs when an observed object is moving at almost the speed of light on a path that makes a narrow angle with the line of sight.
