Etymology: < sun n.1 + stay n.3, probably as a calque on classical Latin sōlstitium solstice n. Compare stay of the sun at stay n.3 3c and earlier sunstead n.
Obsolete.
Either of the two times in the year when the sun is furthest north or south from the equator, after which it appears to move back towards the equator; = solstice n. 1a. Cf. sunstead n.See also earlier stay of the sun at stay n.3 3c.
