Etymology: < sun n.1 + stead n., as a calque on classical Latin sōlstitium solstice n.Compare Middle High German sunnenstat, Old Icelandic sólstaðr. Apparently re-formed in the late 16th cent.
1. Either of the two times in the year when the sun is furthest north or south from the equator, after which it appears to move back towards the equator; = solstice n. 1a. Cf. sunstay n. archaic and rare. after 17th cent.
