Etymology: < Suntory, proprietary name (Santorī in romanized Japanese kana orthography) < English sun n.¹ + an Anglicizing romanization of Torii, the family name of the company's founder, probably so-called with allusion to Japanese akadama red ball, used in the name of a fortified wine produced by Torii's company in 1907.The company was founded in 1899 by Shinjirō Torii, initially importing Western wines, and later also producing fortified wine. In 1923 it began operating a whisky distillery, naming its first single malt Suntory Shirofuda (lit. ‘Suntory White Label’) in 1929; this was apparently the first use of the name Suntory . The rising sun, often represented as a red disk or ball, is a national symbol of Japan (compare rising sun n. 4 and Nippon n.), and uses of English sun n.¹ in Japanese names of businesses are frequent.
