Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Gujarati. Partly a borrowing from Bengali. Etymons: Dutch suparij; Hindi supārī; Gujarati sopārī; Bengali supāri.
Etymology: In α. forms originally < (i) Dutch suparij (1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598) and in later use directly < its etymon (ii) Hindi supārī; in β. forms < its cognate (iii) Gujarati sopārī; in γ. forms < its cognate (iv) Bengali supāri (pronounced with initial /ʃ/), all in sense ‘betel nut, betel leaf’, probably ultimately < Sanskrit supāra salutary (originally ‘(of a river) safe to cross’) < su- well, good (see eu- comb. form) + an inflected form of pṛ- to convey across, assist (see fare v.1). Compare paan n.
Chiefly South Asian.
A betel nut (areca nut); (also) the areca palm Areca catechu (now rare). Also: such nuts used as a masticatory, typically contained within a betel leaf (cf. paan n.). Also attributive.
