Etymology: < (i) Middle French superhabunder to be plentiful, to be abundant (c1370; also superhabonder ; compare Middle French, French †superabonder (1587) and Middle French surabonder surabound v.), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin superabundare to overflow, to be in excess (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), to abound in, to be full of (Vulgate), to exceed (13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin super- super- prefix + abundāre abound v.1 Compare Spanish sobreabundar (second half of the 15th cent.; a1260 as †sobreabondar ), Portuguese sobreabundar (14th cent. as †sobreauõdar ), superabundar (1679), Italian sovrabbondare (a1294 as †soprabbondare ). Compare earlier overabound v., surabound v.

a. intransitive. To abound beyond something else; to be more abundant than something (stated or implied). Cf. overabound v. 1.Chiefly with allusion to Romans 5:20: ‘The Lawe entred, that..where sinne abounded, grace did much more abound’ (King James Bible). Compare the same passage in the Vulgate: Lex autem subintravit ut abundaret delictum. Ubi autem abundavit delictum, superabundavit gratia.
