Brit. /ˈsuːpərˌɔːltə/, /ˈsjuːpərˌɔːltə/, /ˈsuːpərˌɒltə/, /ˈsjuːpərˌɒltə/, U.S. /ˌsupərˈɔltər/, /ˌsupərˈɑltər/
Forms:

β. Middle English–1600s superaltare, Middle English– superaltar, 1500s superaltere, 1500s–1600s superalter.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Apparently also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French superaltare ; Latin superaltare ; super- prefix, altar n.
Etymology: In sense 1 < (i) Anglo-Norman superaltare, superaltarie portable altar (second half of the 13th cent. or earlier; compare Middle French superaltaire (1403), superaltare (1530 in Palsgrave) and post-classical Latin pannus superaltaris (c1220 in a British source), all in sense ‘altar cloth’), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin superaltare (also superaltarium) portable altar (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources) < super- super- prefix + altare altar n. In sense 2, which appears to have no parallels in Latin or the Romance languages, apparently independently < super- prefix + altar n.The plural form superaltarys could alternatively be taken as showing a plural of superaltare or superaltar (with plural morpheme -ys ); the plural form superaltaries could be taken as implying a singular in either -ie or in -y. It is unclear whether the following quots. are to be taken as showing the Middle English, the Latin, or the Anglo-Norman word:1339 in F. Palgrave Antient Kalendars & Inventories (1836) III. 191 Deux tables de yban pro super altares.1404 in J. Raine Testamenta Eboracensia (1836) I. 334 Unum superaltare de blakegete.
