Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Supersaurus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Supersaurus (J. A. Jensen 1973, initially as a nickname) < super- super- prefix + -saurus -saurus comb. form.
Palaeontology.
A genus of very large sauropod dinosaurs of the Upper Jurassic period, related to Apatosaurus but possibly reaching a length of 34 m; (also supersaurus) a dinosaur of this genus.Valid publication: J. A. Jensen 1985, in Great Basin Naturalist 45 701.

1973 Reader's Digest June 53/1 The story of Supersaurus actually began when Jensen saw an enormous dinosaur leg bone on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
1982 N.Y. Times 7 Feb. vi. 26/2 James A. Jensen..in 1972..dug up bones of what was then the largest dinosaur ever found, a 75-ton, 75-foot-long creature he calls supersaurus.
2001 D. Burnie Kingfisher Illustr. Dinosaur Encycl. 82/3 A giant among giants, Supersaurus has the distinction of being one of the largest land animals ever to have walked the Earth.
