Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: supersensual adj., -ism suffix; super- prefix, sensualism n.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < supersensual adj. + -ism suffix, apparently after German models (especially Übersinnlichkeit (1819 or earlier), but see note), and partly (in sense 2) < super- prefix + sensualism n.In quot. 1849 at sense 1 translating German Entsinnlichung removal from the realm of the senses, lit. ‘un-sensualizing’ (compare unsensualize v.). The German word is also translated as ‘spiritualizing’ in the same text (compare spiritualizing n.).
