Any plant of the genera Astragalus and Oxytropis (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), characterized by pinnately divided leaves and axillary racemes of often purple or yellow flowers; an astragalus, an oxytropis; esp. (more fully sweet milk-vetch) a Eurasian plant of calcareous grassland and scrub, A. glycyphyllos, which has greenish-white flowers (also called wild liquorice).
