Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Suriname , -er suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of Suriname (formerly Surinam; Dutch Suriname) + -er suffix1. Compare Dutch Surinamer (c1679 as Zurrenamer, or earlier).The region was apparently named after the Suriname river (the name of which is recorded in 1596 as Shurinama , in an English context). An English colony was established in the region in the mid 17th cent and ceded to the Netherlands in 1667. The name of the region is attested in English use from the mid 17th cent. (e.g. a1652 as Sorrenham , 1661 as Surinam ), and in Dutch use from the second half of the 17th cent. (e.g. 1685 as Suriname ; compare slightly earlier Zurinams Surinamese adj.). Compare also French Suriname, name of the river (1662 or earlier), name of the region (1664 or earlier). In English, the usual form of the place name was Surinam until the second half of the 20th cent.
A native or inhabitant of Suriname; a person of Surinamese descent. Cf. Surinamese n.Formerly a Dutch colony, Suriname gained independence in 1975.
