Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. syntactico-morphological Brit. /sɪnˌtaktᵻkəʊmɔːfəˈlɒdʒᵻkl/, U.S. /sɪnˌtæktəkoʊˌmɔrfəˈlɑdʒək(ə)l/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: syntactic adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < syntactic adj. + -o- connective.Found in a number of formations, exemplified below, from the first half of the 20th cent.
chiefly Linguistics.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘both syntactic and ——’, as syntactico-semantic, syntactico-morphological, etc. Cf. syntacto- comb. form 1.
