Etymology: < syntax n. + -ian suffix. In sense A. 2 after (and in sense A. 1 perhaps influenced by) post-classical Latin syntaxista (frequently from late 16th to 19th cent. in continental sources). Compare syntactician n.

1. = syntactician n. 2. Obsolete. rare.Although from a source written by a Jesuit priest, quot. 1608 seems to illustrate the sense ‘an expert in or student of syntax’.
