Originally and chiefly attributive.Originally with reference to relatively low-budget Italian-made films of the late 1950s and early 1960s, typically featuring heroic figures such as Hercules and Samson (cf. peplum n. 3), but later often used more broadly to include lavish Hollywood historical epics and some fantasy films with similar settings (cf. sword and sorcery n.).
