In sense 1 probably after Dutch †actionist trader in shares, speculator (1660; now actionnist); compare also French actioniste shareholder (1688), trader in shares (1714).In specific use in sense 3 after German Aktionist (1986 or earlier in this specific use); compare actionism n. 3, and earlier Viennese Actionist n. at Viennese adj. and n. Compounds.
