Origin: Apparently a borrowing from an Arawak language.
Etymology: Apparently < an Arawak language (compare Arawak kuba heartwood of a tree).An Arawak compound *dakuba ( < da-, combining form of ada tree + kuba heartwood) would be conceivable as the etymon of the English word, but is not recorded.
1. The hard durable heartwood of any of various tropical trees found in Guyana and neighbouring regions, esp. the wallaba, Eperua falcata (family Fabaceae) and the greenheart, Chlorocardium rodiei (family Lauraceae). Now rare.

This wood is the heart of the upper portion of the trunks of Wallaba trees which have been felled in the forests, and from the sap wood has decayed... The defect of Wallaba and its tacouba is its inability to bear great lateral strain.
1882 Timehri 1 175 When young and sappy, it [sc. the wood of the greenheart tree] decays rapidly from the outside, and leaves a small core of durable wood, locally known as ‘tacouba’.
1905 Brit. Guiana Admin. Rep. 1904–5 12 The east and west ends..were fenced with tacouba posts and barbed wire.

2. Caribbean (Guyana). A tree trunk or fallen tree, typically one of which only the heartwood remains; esp. one which impedes the navigation of a river, or over which a river crossing may be made.
