Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: table n., mountain n.
Etymology: < table n. + mountain n. In specific use in sense 1 apparently after Dutch Tafelberg (1652 or earlier in this sense, 1670 or earlier denoting a flat-topped mountain in other parts of the world; > Afrikaans Tafelberg ), itself after Portuguese Taboa do Cabo (1503), literally ‘Table of the Cape’, the name given to the mountain near the Cape of Good Hope by the Portuguese admiral Antonio de Saldanha; compare also French Montagne de la Table (1687 or earlier). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Mons Mensae Mons Mensae n.
