Etymology: < table n. + board n. With sense 1 compare Middle Dutch tafelbert , tafelbort (Dutch †tafelboord ), Middle Low German tavelbret , Middle High German zabelbret (German (now hist.) Zabelbrett ), Old Icelandic taflborð , Old Swedish taflbordh (Swedish (now hist.) tavelbord ), and Welsh tawlbwrdd (13th cent.; probably < early Scandinavian), all denoting a board for backgammon or a similar game (see discussion at table n. and tavel n.1), and also earlier tabler n.1 With sense 2 compare later taffel board n. at taffel n. Compounds and the Middle Low German noun cited at that entry.In quots. 1841 and 1905 at sense 1 after Welsh tawlbwrdd and Old Icelandic taflborð respectively.
