单词 tablement
释义

tablementn.

Brit. /ˈteɪblm(ə)nt/, U.S. /ˈteɪbəlm(ə)nt/
Forms: Middle English tabelment, Middle English tabilment, Middle English tablemer (transmission error), Middle English tabulment, Middle English–1500s tabylment, Middle English–1600s 1800s– tablement, 1500s tabullment.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French tablement ; table v., -ment suffix.
Etymology: Partly < Anglo-Norman tablement plank (early 13th cent. or earlier), projecting horizontal course or moulding (first half of the 13th cent. or earlier), tablet (see tablet n. 2) (first half of the 14th cent.; < tabler table v. + -ment -ment suffix), and partly (in sense 3) < table v. + -ment suffix. Compare classical Latin tabulāmentum flooring, boarding, in post-classical Latin also entablement, coping, string course (frequently from 1222 in British sources; also as tablamentum , tablementum ), wooden altar frontal (1364, 1368 in British sources; 1415 as tablementum ), Middle Dutch tafelment entablement (Dutch taflement ), and also Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French entablement entablement n.Forms in tabul- perhaps show the influence of classical Latin tabulāmentum. In quot. c1400 at sense 1 with reference to the foundation walls of the heavenly Jerusalem; compare post-classical Latin fundamenta muri civitatis (Vulgate, Revelation 21:19). It is unclear whether the following quot. (in sense ‘wooden altar frontal’) should be interpreted as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:c1397 Inquisition Misc. (P.R.O.: C 257/58/6A) j chesible ij aubes ij tablementz j frontel.
