Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin synechia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin synechia (1742 or earlier) < ancient Greek συνέχεια continuity, in Hellenistic Greek also viscosity < συνεχής continuous, conjoined, clinging, dense ( < συν- syn- prefix + the stem of ἔχειν to have, hold (see Hector n.), after συνέχειν to hold or keep together) + -εια -y suffix3; compare -ia suffix1.
Medicine.
1. Ophthalmology. Adhesion (adhesion n. 5) between the iris and the cornea (more fully anterior synechia) or between the iris and the capsule of the lens (more fully posterior synechia); an adhesion of this kind.
