Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin terrigena , -ous suffix, Latin terra , -i- connective, -genous comb. form.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin terrigena person born of the earth ( < terra terra n. + gen- , base of gignere to beget (see genital adj.) + -a -a suffix1) + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin terrigenus earth-born (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), Middle French terrigene , French terrigène (noun) person born of the earth (a1377 in an isolated attestation, subsequently from 1742), (adjective) produced from the earth (1824). In senses 2 and 3 independently < classical Latin terra earth (see terra n.) + -i- connective + -genous comb. form; with the use in sense 2 compare earlier alkaligenous adj., and also calcigenous adj., kaligenous adj., etc.
1. Esp. of an animal: †produced from the earth, that has sprung from the earth; earth-born (obsolete); (in later use) terrestrial (as opposed to marine). Also figurative: earthly, worldly. Now rare.
