单词 tassa
释义

tassan.

Brit. /ˈtasə/, U.S. /ˈtæsə/, Caribbean English /ˈtasa/, /ˈtasʌ/
Forms: 1900s– tassa, 1900s– tasa.
Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu ṭāsa.
Etymology: < Urdu ṭāsa < Indian Persian ṭāsa kind of drum, originally a variant of ṭās (round metal) drinking cup, goblet, perhaps related to Arabic ṭās , ṭāsa round shallow metal drinking vessel (compare tass n.2), although the nature of the relationship is unclear.Compare the following isolated earlier example from a description of the Yemen, probably reflecting an Arabic word (transmitted via German):1936 K. Kirkness tr. H. Helfritz Land without Shade i. 67 From an early hour drummers marched through the city beating with two long wooden sticks a peculiar rhythm on the tassa, a small metal drum covered with an animal skin. In Indian English, the instrument is more usually called tasha, reflecting a separate, though probably related, Urdu word.
Caribbean (chiefly Trinidad).
More fully tassa drum. A bowl-shaped goatskin drum of north Indian origin which is typically hung from the neck and played with two sticks. Also: a style of Caribbean percussion music, derived from Indian drumming traditions, which is performed at weddings, festivals, and other gatherings, esp. in Trinidad, by an ensemble playing tassa drums and other instruments like the dhol (see dhol n.).The drums were introduced to the Caribbean by Indian workers in the 19th century, and the Caribbean style of music evolved from this as an independent genre in the 20th century.
