Etymology: < scientific Latin Taxodium, genus name (L. C. Richard 1810, in Ann. du Muséum d'Hist. Nat. 16 298) < classical Latin taxus yew (see taxaceous adj.) + post-classical Latin -odium -ode comb. form¹.

Any of several cypress trees comprising or formerly included in the genus Taxodium, now chiefly restricted to two trees of southern North America and Mexico, the bald cypress, T. distichum, of the southern United States, and the Mexican cypress, T. mucronatum (also called ahuehuete). Also (in form Taxodium): the genus itself.
