Etymology: < Portuguese talapão, < Talaing (Old Peguan) tala pôi ‘my lord’, the title of a Buddhist monk, corresponding (in use) to Burmese pôngyî. (Sir R. C. Temple in Indian Antiq. XXXIX. 159.)
1. A Buddhist monk or priest, properly of Pegu; extended by Europeans to those of Siam (Thailand), Burma (Myanmar), and other Buddhist countries.
