Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: technic adj., -ism suffix; technic n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: Partly < technic adj. + -ism suffix, and partly < technic n. + -ism suffix. Compare German Technicismus (1790 in I. Kant Critik der Urtheilskraft as †Technicism , in sense ‘teleological way in which nature works’, opposed to Mechanismus mechanism n.; 1845 or earlier in sense ‘technical term’; now Technizismus ). Compare earlier technicality n. and later technique n.
