Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1817) probably < French technique (masculine noun) technical character, technicality (1744); in later use < French technique (feminine noun) branch of knowledge, science, scholarship (1842), technical methods collectively, the formal or practical aspect of an art, science, or subject (1846), mechanical and applied arts (20th cent. or earlier), uses as noun of technique technical (see technic adj.). Compare earlier technic n.
