Etymology: Middle English bōþe, bōthe, probably < Old Danish *bóð (modern Danish and Swedish bod booth, stall, shop = Old Icelandic búð feminine dwelling, < East Norse bóa = Icelandic búa to dwell. Compare Middle High German buode ‘hut, tent’, modern German bude ‘booth, stall’: perhaps also from East Norse. Some think the Germanic word to be adopted < Slavonic: compare Czech bouda, Polish buda, which are at least cognate.
