Etymology: Akin to Old Norse talma to hinder, obstruct, Middle Low German talmen to trouble with speaking, Low German talmen to be slow in speech and at work, to linger, dawdle ( Brem. Wbch.), East Frisian talmen to plague, worry, solicit tiresomely, Dutch talmen to linger, dawdle, loiter.
Obsolete exc. dialect.
intransitive. To become exhausted; to fail, tire, faint, swoon.
