单词 tamarack
释义

tamarackn.

Brit. /ˈtamərak/, U.S. /ˈtæm(ə)ˌræk/
Forms: 1800s tamerac, 1800s tamerack, 1800s temerack, 1800s termerack, 1800s–1900s tamarac, 1800s– tamarach, 1800s– tamarack, 1900s tamrac.
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < an Algonquian language, although no likely etymon has been traced. Compare North American French tamarac (1835 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier hackmatack n. 1.Attributed by F. A. Michiaux to the Dutch settlers of New Jersey, but no evidence for this word has been found in Dutch, and the form given here may reflect a regional borrowing from English:1810 F. A. Michaux Histoire des Arbres Forestiers de l'Amérique Septentrionale I. 29 American larch..Hacmatack..Tamarack par les Hollandois du New-Jersey. Sometimes confused with the similar-sounding tamarisk n. (compare sense 2 at that entry), although the plants look very different.
North American.
Any of several North American coniferous trees; spec. the hackmatack or red larch, Larix laricina, and the lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta. Also: the wood of such a tree. Cf. hackmatack n.
