Etymology: < French tampon: etymologically a doublet of tampion n., introduced anew from modern French.
1. A plug or tent inserted tightly into a wound, orifice, etc., to arrest hæmorrhage, or used as a pessary (Surgery). Esp. one inserted into the vagina; now spec. one made commercially and bought to provide sanitary protection during menstruation. Also attributive.
