Forms: Middle English tarrer(e, 1500s tarryour, 1600s–1700s terrier, 1800s tarrier.
Etymology: In 15th cent. tarrer(e, < Old French tarere (c1200 in Godefroy), modern French tarière < late Latin taratrum (Isidore xix. xix. 15, ‘taratrum quasi teratrum’): compare Greek τέρετρον borer, gimlet.
A boring instrument, an auger; now, an instrument for extracting a bung from a barrel.
