单词 tavel
释义

taveln.1

Forms: early Old English tebel- (in compounds), early Old English tebil- (in compounds), early Old English tebl, early Old English teblae, early Old English tefil, Old English tæfel, Old English tæfl, early Middle English tæuel, Middle English tauel.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tabula.
Etymology: < classical Latin tabula table n., via an unattested vulgar Latin, post-classical Latin, or Romance form with lenition of intervocalic -b- . Compare table n. and discussion at that entry. In Old English apparently usually a strong feminine (tæfl ), occasionally apparently also a weak feminine (early Old English teblae ) and a strong neuter (tæfl ). The (weak feminine) form taflę , attested once in a glossary in a 10th-cent. continental manuscript (Trier Stadtbibliothek 40), which contains some Old English glosses, is (on account of its stem vowel a ) probably to be interpreted as either Old Saxon or Old High German rather than Old English. The forms tebl , teblae , tæfl show loss of the medial unstressed vowel of the Latin etymon; the form tebel- (in compounds) shows the development of el from earlier syllabic l . The Latin word was also borrowed into other Germanic languages at an early date; for parallels in the semantic field of board games compare Old Saxon tabal , tabil table for playing at dice, Old High German zabal game played on a board (glossing classical Latin ālea (see aleatory adj.) and tabula table n.; Middle High German zabel , German †Zabel , also in sense ‘board on which a game is played’), Old Icelandic tafl game played on a board, also (rarely) dice, tafla piece used in a board game, Old Swedish taffwel , tafl , tawel game played on a board, board on which a game is played (Swedish (now archaic or historical) tavel ), Old Danish tafl , tauel game played on a board, board on which a game is played (Danish (now archaic or regional) tavl , also in sense ‘piece used in a board game’). For formal parallels in other senses see table n.
Obsolete.
A piece used in a board game, a die; (also) a game played on a board, esp. dice; the board on which it is played.
