Origin: A borrowing from Korean. Etymon: Korean dangsudo.
Etymology: < Korean dangsudo (also transliterated as tangsudo) < tang- of or relating to China ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese táng Tang n.5) + su- ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese shǒu hand) + do way ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese dào way: see tao n. and compare budo n.), probably influenced by or related to Japanese karatedō , which was originally written with the Japanese (kanji) equivalents of the same three Chinese characters that can be used to write the Korean word (see karate n.).
A Korean martial art using the hands and feet to deliver and block blows, similar to karate.
