Etymology: < telegraph n. + -ist suffix, perhaps after French télégraphiste (1805 or earlier) or German Telegraphist (1797 or earlier; now usually Telegrafist ). Compare earlier telegrapher n.
A person who works a telegraph (telegraph n. 3a or, in earlier use, 1a); a telegraph operator.
