Etymology: < Telemark (Norwegian Telemark), the name of an administrative district in southern Norway, where this type of swing turn originated.With telemark swing (see quots. 1901, 1923 at sense 1) compare German Telemarkschwung (1901 or earlier), Norwegian telemarksving (1908 or earlier); with use as noun in sense 1 compare German Telemark (1910 or earlier). With telemark ski at sense 2 compare German Telemarkski (1898 or earlier).
Skiing.
1. More fully telemark turn, telemark swing. A type of turn made on equipment which enables the heel to be lifted off the ski while the toe remains fixed, performed by advancing the outer ski forward while the inner ski is allowed to trail behind with the heel of the foot lifted.
