Etymology: < French téléoste (1856 or earlier) < scientific Latin Teleostei , group name (J. Müller 1846, in Abhandlungen der Königlichen Akad. der Wiss. zu Berlin 1844 198) < ancient Greek τέλεος , τέλειος finished, complete (see teleo- comb. form1) + ὀστέον bone: see osteo- comb. form. Compare earlier teleostean n., teleostean adj.
